Dewane Hughes

Dewane Hughes is a Professor of Studio Art and Graduate Program Advisor at the University of Texas at Tyler, specializing in sculpture, design, and jewelry. He holds a B.A. in sculpture, philosophy, and religion from Buena Vista University (1992) and an M.F.A. in sculpture from Montana State University (1996). His work explores language, communication, and the interplay between art and perception, influenced by Beat Generation poets and scholars like Noam Chomsky and Marshall McLuhan.

Hughes has exhibited widely, including at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Martin Museum of Art, and the International Museum of Arts and Science. Notable public commissions include works in the Hardy Family Art Collection and the City of Boerne, Texas. He served as President of the Texas Sculpture Group (2014–2017) and is now President Emeritus. Recent projects include a 2022 residency at the Buffalo Creek Art Center, where two of his sculptures are now permanently displayed.
