Dewan Ahmed is an Associate Teaching Professor and Associate Chair of Academics in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). He joined the department in Fall 2013 and currently serves as Graduate Program Director. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Ottawa (2009), an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Dr. Ahmed's research focuses on Intelligent Systems, Computer Networking, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning, Big Data, Serious Games, Multimedia, and CS Education. He has over 50 publications in top-tier venues including IEEE conferences and authored five book chapters. Notable contributions include solutions for P2P MMOGs, cloud-based serious games for health, and surveillance systems optimization. His work bridges theoretical computer science with practical applications in healthcare and education.
Dr. Ahmed has held academic positions at King Saud University, Carleton University, and the University of Ottawa, where he was a post-doctoral fellow. He received awards such as the NSERC Meritorious Candidate recognition, OCRI Best Student Researcher Award, and IEEE ICME Quality Reviewer Award. His current teaching emphasizes graduate-level curriculum design in algorithms and data structures, with a focus on student-centered learning methodologies.
He leads initiatives in educational technology, including gamification strategies and team-based programming projects. His research labs explore cloud-based systems, vehicular networks, and eHealth frameworks, collaborating with industry and academic partners globally.
