Dessi Malinova

Dessi Malinova is a Senior Lecturer at the Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, part of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen's University Belfast. She maintains an active research program with numerous publications and ongoing projects, and is currently accepting PhD students for immunology and immune cell biology research.

Her research focuses on the mechanisms governing immune cell interactions, specifically examining immune synapse formation, endocytosis, and antigen presentation in B cells and dendritic cells. Dr. Malinova's work integrates immunology, cell biology, and genetics to understand fundamental immune processes. Her research fingerprint reveals significant contributions to areas including Actin, Antigen, B Cell, Immunodeficiency, Cytoskeleton, Mutation, Dendritic Cell, and Immunological Synapse research.

Analysis of her recent publications shows a strong emphasis on B cell biology and antigen presentation mechanisms, with increasing application to disease contexts such as multiple myeloma. Her work spans fundamental immunological research through to translational applications in biomedical engineering and materials science, demonstrating interdisciplinary breadth while maintaining focus on immune cell function.

Dr. Malinova actively supervises students and serves as an advisor on immunological research projects. She participates in significant collaborative research initiatives including the Future Medicines Institute (R1300CNR) and the Establishment of mass spectrometry based proteomic capabilities at Queen's University Belfast (R1127BSC).

She is actively engaged in the immunology community, having served as Chair for the British Society for Immunology Congress in 2023 and as a Member of the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council. Her public engagement includes media appearances such as 'Women in Immunology' (2024) and 'RTE 10 things to know about' (2023).
