Desislava Kovacheva

Desislava Kovacheva is an academic at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG) in Sofia, Bulgaria, where she serves as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, Department of History and Theory of Architecture. She teaches multiple courses related to architectural heritage preservation across architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture programs.

Her educational background includes a Master of Architecture from UACEG (2007-2013), with additional training through the ERASMUS program at Technische Universität Wien in Vienna, Austria (2010-2011). She has been pursuing her PhD at UACEG since April 2015 and previously conducted PhD research at RWTH Aachen University in Germany (2016-2017).

Dr. Kovacheva's research focuses on architectural heritage preservation, cultural heritage, and urban planning, with particular emphasis on city squares and public spaces in historical contexts. Her work examines the value characteristics of square spaces, preservation strategies for cultural heritage, and the sustainable development of historical urban landscapes. She maintains fluency in Bulgarian (mother tongue), English (C2 level), and German (B1 level).

Her publications reveal a strong focus on the historical urban landscapes of Sofia and other European cities, with particular attention to the relationship between architectural heritage and contemporary urban development. She has contributed to major architectural events including the Venice Architecture Biennale, exploring connections between architecture, public space, and civil society. Her research demonstrates how historical urban spaces can be preserved while accommodating modern needs through sustainable development approaches.

Dr. Kovacheva teaches several courses including Preservation of Architectural Heritage, Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Buildings in a Historical Context, and Cultural Heritage across various architecture and urban planning programs at UACEG. Her teaching spans VIII-X semesters for architecture majors and VII-VIII semesters for urbanism and landscape architecture specialties, covering both theoretical foundations and practical applications of heritage preservation.
