Desiree Hellegers is a Professor of English and Director of the Collective for Social and Environmental Justice at Washington State University Vancouver. Her work bridges literature, activism, and environmental justice, with a focus on 17th/18th-century texts, colonialism, houselessness, and fossil fuel resistance. She has been documenting Pacific Northwest social movements for over two decades and produces radio segments for KBOO’s Old Mole Variety Hour.
Education: B.A. English (Georgetown University, 1983); Ph.D. (University of Washington, 1994). Fellowships include a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University (1991-92) and the Lewis E. and Stella G. Buchanan Distinguished Associate Professorship (2019-21).
Research interests span ecocriticism, Shakespearean Commons/enclosure critiques, and oral history. Awards include the 2021 College of Arts and Sciences Public Engagement Award. Her creative work includes plays like No Room of Her Own and poetry addressing climate collapse, militarism, and Indigenous struggles.
Key contributions include the Thin Green Line digital archive of fossil fuel resistance and collaborations with grassroots movements. She advises on community-based education initiatives and advocates for climate justice through media and academia.
