Derrick Klaassen, Ph.D., R.Psych, is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) program at Adler University. His work integrates existential-phenomenological psychology with clinical practice, emphasizing compassionate mentorship and social justice aligned with Adlerian values. He co-founded the Existential Research Lab with Dr. Janelle Kwee, fostering applied, community-oriented research.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Counselling Psychology from The University of British Columbia and Trinity Western University, respectively; B.A. in Psychology from Trinity Western University.
His research explores existential crises, meaning-making in recovery (traumatic brain injury, chronic pain), grief and moral injury, and qualitative methodologies like phenomenology. He supervises students in projects examining shame, loneliness, and death-related regret.
Scientific Awards include SSHRC Institutional Grants, Canadian Psychological Association memberships, and health research scholarships. His publications focus on existential analysis in Canada, logotherapy, and phenomenological approaches to trauma and grief.
