Derrick Hindery is an Associate Professor in the Department of Global Studies at the University of Oregon, affiliated with the School of Global Studies and Languages. He serves on the UO Study Abroad Programs Committee, the Provost’s Teaching Academy, and the Latin American Studies Advisory Board.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Geography, University of California, Los Angeles (2003)
Research interests focus on neoliberal and post-neoliberal economic development models affecting indigenous communities and ecosystems in Latin America (particularly Bolivia) and the U.S. His work examines:
- Social impacts of gas pipelines/mines in Chiquitano Forest and Chaco Forest
- Indigenous alternatives like medicinal oil cooperatives and artisan schools
- LNG projects across Bolivia-Peru-Southern California-Mexico commodity chains
- Deforestation trends in Bolivia's post-neoliberal era
- Chinese investment and gender-environment justice
Publication trends include critical analyses of corporate-environment interactions (Enron/Shell), geospatial studies, and comparative policy research.
Teaching includes courses on Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice in Bolivia (study abroad program), Global Environmental Issues, Development and Social Change, and Sustainability Movements.

- Co-founder of Students for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice in Bolivia (SIREJ)
- Collaboration with Bolivian indigenous groups (Chiquitano/Monkóx, Guarayo, Ayoreo)
- Support for non-timber forest products and cultural preservation
