Derek Sheffield is a Professor of English and faculty member in the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Western Colorado University. He holds an MFA in Poetry from the University of Washington and has taught at Wenatchee Valley College since 2003, co-teaching Northwest Nature Writing with biologist Dr. Dan Stephens. His interdisciplinary work bridges poetry and ecology, evidenced by field residencies at Loowit-Mount St. Helens and the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest. He serves as Poetry Editor of Terrain.org, the world’s oldest online journal of place-centered art and literature. Awards include the Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize, James Hearst Poetry Prize, and multiple teaching accolades.
Education: MFA in Poetry (University of Washington, 1999), M.I.T. in Teaching (Seattle University, 1993), BA in English with Creative Writing (University of Washington, 1990).
Research interests include nature writing, environmental poetry, and the intersection of science and art. His publications span poetry collections like Not for Luck (2021) and Cascadia Field Guide (2023), as well as edited anthologies. Courses taught at Western include thesis mentoring and contemporary poetry studies.
