Dr. Derek P. Gates is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Faculty of Science. His research bridges inorganic chemistry and polymer science, focusing on novel polymers incorporating main-group elements like phosphorus to achieve unique material properties. He leads the Gates Research Group, which has pioneered studies on phosphorus-containing polymers, including their applications in nanotechnology and catalysis.
Gates holds editorial roles, including Editor of Heteroatom Chemistry (2009–present), and has chaired major conferences such as the 12th International Conference of Heteroatom Chemistry (ICHAC 2017). His awards include the CSC Strem Chemicals Award (Inorganic Chemistry) and the SUS-Teaching Excellence Award (2002). His educational background includes a B.Sc. from Dalhousie University (1993), Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1997), and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1997–99).
Research interests emphasize polymer synthesis methodologies, catalytic systems involving phosphorus-based ligands, and functional materials such as π-conjugated phosphorus polymers. His lab’s work on gold nanoparticle templating via block copolymers exemplifies interdisciplinary innovation. Advising includes notable supervisees like Anna, who completed an M.Sc. under his guidance. The Gates Lab is housed in Chemistry Building D-320 at UBC.
