Derek Mueller is Professor in Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in Arctic cryospheric change. He holds a B.Sc. (Trent), M.Sc. (McGill), and Ph.D. (Laval).
Research investigates climate change impacts on Arctic ice systems: ice shelves, sea/lake ice, and ice islands using remote sensing (microwave/optical) and field observations. Current studies track ice island hazards and glacial fjord dynamics.
Articles reveal consistent themes:
- Ice-ocean interactions in glacial fjords
- Remote sensing of ice dynamics
- Ice island deterioration modeling
- Community-based Arctic monitoring
Awards include NSERC Visiting Fellowship (2009), Roberta Bondar Fellowship (2008), and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2006-07).
Teaches graduate courses: Applications in GIS, Northern Environments seminar, and Masters Research Workshop. Leads Water and Ice Research Laboratory (WIRL) and collaborates with ArcticNet, Canadian Ice Service, and international teams.
