Derek Heeren

Derek Heeren is a Professor and Associate Head for Academic Programs in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He serves as an Irrigation Engineer and Education Coordinator for the Irrigation and Agricultural Water Management (IAWM) program at the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute.

He explores the use of remote sensing, machine learning, and AI to optimize irrigation practices while minimizing environmental impacts like nitrate leaching.

Recent publications highlight advancements in AI-powered irrigation management, UAV-based sensing, and geophysical tools for agricultural applications. Ongoing projects include the Irrigation Educator GPT for decision support in 58+ languages.
