State University of New York at Buffaloمعرفی
Derek Daniels is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo (College of Arts and Sciences). He is also affiliated with the Center for Ingestive Behavior Research (CIBR). He holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
His research focuses on neural mechanisms controlling drinking and eating behaviors, particularly the interplay between glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), hunger, thirst, and learning processes. Key areas include: 1) GLP-1's role in fluid and food intake regulation, and 2) behavioral desensitization models using angiotensin II injections.
Research Highlights:
- Investigates hypothalamic pathways linking fluid intake to cardiovascular health
- Explores sex differences in salt appetite and hormonal regulation
- Studies developmental programming of drinking behavior through early-life dietary exposure
He has secured $2.1M in NIH funding (2022–2026) to study thirst/hunger neural circuits using diabetes insipidus rodent models. His lab (Daniels Laboratory for the Study of Ingestive Behavior) is a hub for neuroendocrine research.
Key Achievements:
- Over 50 peer-reviewed publications since 2000
- Expert on angiotensin II signaling and behavioral desensitization
- Pioneer in GLP-1's multi-system effects
