Dr. Der Chyan (Bill) Lin is an Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Program at Toronto Metropolitan University's Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Mechatronics Engineering. He holds a BSc from National Tsing Hua University (1983) and a PhD from Penn State University (1993). His expertise spans dynamical system theory, chaos, applied stochastic processes, and time series analysis. His research applies advanced mathematical techniques to diverse fields, including financial markets, cardiac physiology, and brainwave dynamics. He teaches courses such as Dynamics, Vibrations, and Probability/Statistics in Engineering. His work emphasizes uncovering hidden patterns in temporal systems, highlighting the interconnectedness of seemingly unrelated phenomena.
Research interests include modeling complex systems like heart rate variability using turbulence analogies, analyzing EEG data for brain dynamics, and studying the 2008 financial crisis through broadband fluctuation synchrony. His contributions bridge engineering, mathematics, and applied sciences, emphasizing the importance of dynamical systems in understanding natural and artificial systems.
Lin has no listed scientific awards but has published extensively in journals like PLOS One, Physical Review Letters, and Physica D. He advises students in mechanical engineering and leads initiatives in undergraduate curriculum development. His lab focuses on interdisciplinary applications of dynamical systems theory.
