Dr. Depeng Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 2018, having previously served as Assistant Professor since 2013. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Dalhousie University (2010), with prior education from Shandong University (BS and MS). His industry experience includes roles at Microsoft (2008–2010) focusing on Windows security and at Blackberry (RIM) on smartphone security. He also worked on a joint MIT-Masdar Institute project post-doctorate.
His research focuses on cybersecurity, IoT security, smart grid security, and aviation safety. Key areas include privacy-preserving protocols, applied cryptography, and embedded systems security. He has contributed to projects such as secure communication frameworks for air traffic management, fault-diagnosable authentication architectures, and privacy solutions for smart grids and healthcare systems.
Dr. Li has published extensively in journals like IEEE Internet of Things Journal and IEEE Access, and conferences like ACM MobiHoc and IEEE S&P. He has advised students on topics ranging from smart home security to aviation cybersecurity. He has also served as guest editor for journals and technical committee member for workshops on data analytics for renewable energy integration.
His work emphasizes practical applications, such as energy-wasting misbehavior detection and secure ambulance transportation using SDN. He collaborates internationally, presenting at venues across the US, Canada, and Asia.
