Education:
- Business Economics degree from HES
- Insurance Administration studies with specialization in Enterprise Risk Management from the University of Amsterdam
Dennis's research focuses on risk management within organizations, with particular emphasis on small and medium enterprises (SMEs). His work examines how SMEs handle risks without formal risk management structures, exploring the concept of organizational resilience as an alternative approach. He investigates behavioral aspects of risk management, including nudging techniques, and how these can be applied in practical business contexts. His research bridges the gap between academic theory and practical application, with strong connections to educational programs.
His publications consistently focus on risk management in SMEs, analyzing both formal and informal approaches across various contexts. He explores the VUCA world (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) and how SMEs can develop resilience to navigate risks effectively. His work spans academic research papers, practical articles, case studies, and a textbook that explains core risk management principles in accessible terms.
Awards:
- Nominee for 'Nothing I Do' Award for work highlighting how many SMEs only receive help when it's too late
Dennis actively guides students in the graduation program and supervises practical assignments within the Risk Management & Behavior minor. He's deeply involved in the Early STATUS research project, which develops a system to help SMEs with 10-50 employees detect strategic crises early, preventing business failure. This project involves collaboration with consortium partners and integrates student participation from relevant minors.
He leads the Risk Management & Behavior research group at the Business Innovation Knowledge Centre and coordinates the Early STATUS project, which works with consortium partners to develop early warning systems for SMEs. His work creates a 'win-win-win' situation where professional practice, education, and research reinforce each other, benefiting all stakeholders involved.
