Professor Dennis Taaffe is a leading academic in Exercise Gerontology and Exercise Oncology at Edith Cowan University (ECU), affiliated with the School of Medical and Health Sciences and the Exercise Medicine Research Institute. He holds a prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Research Fellowship. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Oregon, postdoctoral training at Stanford University, and additional qualifications such as a DSc from Charles Sturt University and an MPH in epidemiology from the University of Hawai'i.
Professor Taaffe’s research focuses on the intersection of exercise, aging, and cancer, with a particular emphasis on improving treatment outcomes through exercise interventions. His work spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses examining the effects of exercise on muscle function, inflammation, and cancer progression. Notable contributions include studies on exercise’s role in mitigating side effects of androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer and its impact on tumor biology.
Key achievements include awards for clinical research excellence and teaching, along with recognition from the American College of Sports Medicine and Exercise and Sports Science Australia. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as JAMA Network Open, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Professor Taaffe leads the Exercise and Gastrointestinal Cancers Research Group and collaborates on national and international projects, including clinical trials like the ERADICATE study (examining exercise and radiation therapy efficacy) and the EXPAN trial (focusing on pancreatic cancer prehabilitation). His work bridges clinical practice and research, aiming to integrate exercise as a cornerstone of cancer care.
