Dennis Pearl

Dennis Pearl is a Research Professor of Statistics at Pennsylvania State University's Department of Statistics. He holds a Ph.D. (1984), M.A. (1975), and A.B. (1972) in Applied Statistics from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on Statistical Phylogenetics and innovative teaching methods in statistics education. Pearl directs the Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education (CAUSE) since 2002, a leading national initiative supporting statistics educators. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and secured over 50 national research grants.

His phylogenetics work develops Bayesian methods for estimating evolutionary tree distributions using molecular data. In education, he emphasizes developing resources like the Distributome project and edutainment strategies to enhance student engagement. Pearl has received prestigious awards, including the ASA Fellowship (2006) and the Evelyn Fix Prize (1985). He teaches courses such as STAT 100 (Introductory Statistics), STAT 400 (Probability), and STAT 597 (Statistics Education Seminar).
