Dennis McNamara is the Park Professor of Sociology and Korean Studies at Georgetown University's College, Department of Sociology. He also serves as Special Assistant to the University President for China Affairs. He holds a B.A. from Saint Louis University and a PhD from Harvard University. His roles include Chair of the Department of Sociology, Chair of University Rank and Tenure, and creator/chair of the biannual Georgetown Conference on Korean Society. He coordinates Georgetown's exchange with China’s Central Party School in Beijing and chairs the Japan/Korea Seminar at the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute.
Research focuses on Korean capitalism, Northeast Asian innovation systems, and university-industry collaboration in ASEAN. Major works include Colonial Origins of Korean Capitalism (1990), Corporatism and Korean Capitalism (1999), and Business Innovation in Asia (2011). Current projects explore innovation systems comparisons between China and Korea, and transnational research networks.
Professional activities include membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, International Sociological Association, and Society for the Study of Socio-Economics (SASE). His global engagements include adjunct professorships at Sogang University (Seoul) and roles at Sophia University (Tokyo) and Renmin University (Beijing).
