Dennis Burton

Dennis Burton, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research, holding the James & Jessie Minor Chair in Immunology. He leads the Burton Laboratory, focusing on broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV, influenza, and coronaviruses. His research emphasizes vaccine design through reverse vaccinology approaches.

Education: B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Oxford (1974), Ph.D. in Physical Biochemistry from Lund University, Sweden (1978).

Research interests include antibody-virus interactions, vaccine immunogen design, and translational studies in non-human primate models. His work is funded by NIH consortia (CHAVI-ID, CHAVD) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Notable awards include the Jenner Award (2018) and recognition as a Top Immunology Scientist (2022). He has authored Roitt's Essential Immunology, winning the British Medical Association Book Award (2012).
