Deniz Koca is a Researcher at Lund University's Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC) and Principal Investigator for BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate. With 48 research outputs and leadership in 17 projects including Horizon Europe initiatives EPIC-SHIFT and FEASTS, Koca specializes in systems science applications for sustainability challenges.
Research focuses on applied systems science using systems thinking, analysis, and dynamics modeling to address complex environmental and socio-economic issues. Key domains include bioeconomy transitions, circular food systems, alternative proteins, and sustainability science aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Methodologically emphasizes stakeholder participatory group modeling for holistic scenario analysis within sustainability criteria.
Recent publications (2023-2016) reveal consistent emphasis on food systems transformation and resource sustainability, with growing focus on protein diversification and circular bioeconomy. Work integrates system dynamics modeling with policy development, particularly through European Commission-funded projects addressing food security and sustainable transitions.

As Principal Investigator for Horizon Europe projects EPIC-SHIFT (€6.5M) and FEASTS, plus GROW Capacity Building and FOSSNET network, Koca leads major collaborative efforts in sustainable food systems. Supervised work includes doctoral education initiatives focusing on challenge-based interdisciplinary learning for sustainability.
Active in transdisciplinary collaboration through Urban Arena network and Nordic Food Forum, with recent activities including SRA workshops on modeling for decision support and invited talks on bioeconomy transitions.
