Dr. Denise Wong serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lecturer at the Department of English and American Literature and Culture, Justus Liebig University Giessen. Since September 2023, she has contributed to the DFG/AHRC-funded UKRI project 'Reading Post-Postmodernist Fictions of the Digital: Narrative, Technology, and Cognition in the Twenty-First Century' under Prof. Jan Alber's team, while teaching undergraduate courses since October 2023. Previously, she held teaching positions at Queen Mary University of London (2019-2023).
Her academic preparation includes a PhD from Queen Mary University of London (2018-2022) with the thesis 'The Poetics of Irony and Anticipatory Shame in Contemporary You-Narration', an MA with Distinction in English Studies (2016-2017), an international exchange at the University of Sussex (2012-2013), and a BA in English from Simon Fraser University (2010-2014).
Wong's research critically examines second-person narration through lenses of affect theory, cognitive literary studies, and digital media. Her work explores anticipatory shame in contemporary fiction like Carmen Maria Machado's In the Dream House and Tsitsi Dangarembga's Tambudzai Trilogy, while analyzing television narratives such as Fleabag to investigate reader-viewer engagement and fourth-wall dynamics. Current projects extend into post-postmodernist digital fictions and critical race theory applications.
Recent publications reveal a cohesive trajectory examining narrative form's relationship to emotional experience, particularly shame and choice mechanics across transmedial contexts. Her scholarship increasingly bridges literary analysis with cognitive science and digital humanities frameworks, evidenced by contributions to journals like Textual Practice and DIEGESIS.
She received an Honourable mention for the Alan Nadel Prize for Best Graduate Student Essay from the International Society for the Study of Narrative (2022).
Wong supervises MA dissertations (ESH6000) and serves as Reviews Co-Editor for C21 Literature: Journal of 21st-century Writings since November 2022. Her teaching spans courses including 'Intermedial and Multimodal Literature' and 'Global Anglophone Narratives', supported by project funding from the DFG/AHRC collaboration.
She actively participates in Prof. Alber's research team at Justus Liebig University, collaborating on interdisciplinary projects that integrate narrative theory, cognitive studies, and digital media analysis within the university's literary research ecosystem.
