Denise Segura is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), with affiliations in the Department of Chicana/o Studies, Program in Latin American and Iberian Studies, and the Women’s Studies Program. She specializes in Chicana Feminist Studies, Latina/o education, and Chicana/Mexicana employment. Since joining UCSB in 1987, she has contributed to the development of Latina/o sociology and served in leadership roles, including Director of the Center for Chicano Studies (1994–1999) and Chair of the Undergraduate Council (2002–2004).
Education: Ph.D., UC Berkeley.
Her research focuses on gender, race-ethnic relations, family dynamics, and work in Chicana/o communities. She has co-edited significant works like Women and Migration in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands (2007). Her courses include topics such as Chicana Feminisms, Sociology of the Borderlands, and Race, Class, and Gender.
Service and Leadership: She has held key governance roles at UCSB and the UC Systemwide Committee on Educational Policy. Her work bridges academic research with community and policy advocacy.
