Denise Cruz

Denise Cruz, MA, CCC-SLP is a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Steinhardt's Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders. A bilingual Puerto Rican clinician and educator, she holds certifications from ASHA and serves on the New York State Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Licensing Board. Her work bridges clinical practice with advocacy, emphasizing culturally responsive care and DEI initiatives.

Education: BA and MA in Speech-Language Hearing Sciences from Herbert H. Lehman College (CUNY). Clinical expertise spans 20+ years in swallowing/voice disorders, pediatric/geriatric populations, and head/neck cancer rehabilitation. Professional commitments include mentoring underrepresented students and advancing social justice in healthcare through 'practivism' (practicing clinician + activist).

Research interests focus on culturally competent diagnostic/therapeutic models, professional voice care, and addressing systemic inequities in speech-language pathology education and practice. Maintains active clinical practice through private sector per diem work while contributing to regulatory frameworks through her board service.
