Denis Pelli is a Professor of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University. He leads the Pelli Lab, researching visual object recognition, crowding, and beauty perception. His work combines psychophysics, neuroimaging (fMRI), and computational modeling. He holds a PhD in Physiology from Cambridge University.
Research focuses on how clutter (crowding) limits peripheral vision and its implications for reading, particularly in children and adults. Recent projects include developing online testing methods (EasyEyes) and studying neural correlates of crowding. His beauty research explores the link between empathy, emotion, and aesthetic judgment across modalities.
Key contributions include the Bouma model of crowding and insights into cortical V4's role in visual processing. Collaborative projects with Jonathan Winawer bridge neuroimaging and psychophysics. The lab emphasizes open science, hosting weekly discussions and welcoming visitors.
