Dr. Denis J. Obermeyer serves as Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections in the History Theology department at Belmont Abbey College. He holds a Ph.D. in Theology (Historical) from The Catholic University of America, an S.T.B. in Theology from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), an M.A. in Religious Studies (Scripture) from the Institute for Religious Studies at Dunwoodie, and an M.A. in History (Medieval) from S.U.N.Y. Binghamton. His expertise spans Scripture interpretation, Christology, religious history, and codicology, with a focus on medieval manuscripts and book history.
Known for curating rare literary collections at the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library, Obermeyer’s work emphasizes preserving and interpreting historical theological texts. His research often intersects with medieval history and the material culture of religious texts. Though no publications or presentations are listed here, his academic contributions align with his curatorial role, such as his interest in book curses exemplified by a 12th-century Bible quote: “Let him die the death; let him be fried in a pan…”
