Delores M. Robinson is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Alabama. Her research focuses on the tectonic evolution of orogenic systems, particularly the Himalayas, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Gulf of Mexico. She investigates structural architecture, kinematic processes, and the interplay between tectonics and sedimentology. Her work combines field mapping, geochronology, and numerical modeling to understand mountain-building processes and hydrocarbon potential in fold-thrust belts.
Education: PhD, University of Arizona (2001); MS, Vanderbilt University (1997); BS, Guilford College (1994).
Research Interests: She studies orogenic evolution in the Himalaya–Nepal, India, Bhutan, and southern Tibet, as well as the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama and the Cordilleran in Montana. Current projects include structural analysis of the Pakistan Salt Range and hydrocarbon potential assessment in the Himalayan fold-thrust belt. She also explores the rifting of Pangea and Gulf of Mexico evolution.
Research Projects: The Pakistan Project aims to determine thrust belt geometry and hydrocarbon potential through fieldwork, modeling, and collaboration with Pakistani institutions. The Himalaya and Tibet projects focus on the structural and kinematic evolution of Nepal and India regions, with NSF-funded fieldwork and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
Grants/Advising: Advises PhD and MS students on topics like Himalayan tectonics, Gulf of Mexico stratigraphy, and petroleum systems. Current students include Gourab Bhattacharya (Indus Suture Zone) and Joel Schiffer (Pakistan fold-thrust belt). Past students have transitioned to industry roles in oil and geotechnical sectors.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with international teams in Pakistan and Nepal, including the University of Peshawar. Active in fieldwork logistics, centrifuge modeling labs, and interdisciplinary training programs.
