Deirdre Foley is a Research Fellow in History at Hertford College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on modern Irish history, particularly the legal and social status of women in 20th century Ireland. She holds a PhD in History from Dublin City University, an MPhil from Trinity College Dublin, and a BA from University College Dublin.
Her current work prepares a monograph investigating the evolution of women's legal and social status in Ireland through original archival research. Key themes include gendered law, the male breadwinner ideal, transnational feminist movements, and the intersection of class and patriarchal structures. This research evaluates Ireland's reform processes within both national and transnational contexts.
- Awards: Roy Foster Irish Government Research Fellowship
Her research explores the transnational dimensions of social change, including Ireland's EEC membership influences, and examines understudied legislation and policy actors. Foley's work bridges Irish and international feminist historiography.
