Deirdre Curtin

Deirdre Curtin is a Full-time Professor of European Law at the European University Institute (EUI) since 2016, leading the Department of Law. She is also Director of the Centre for Judicial Cooperation at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and previously served as EUI’s Dean of Graduate Studies (2021–2025). Before joining EUI, she held the Chair in European Law and Governance at the University of Amsterdam (2008–2016), founding the Amsterdam Centre of European Law and Governance, and earlier chaired European Governance at Utrecht University (2003–2013). Her career began as a Legal Secretary at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg.

Education: University College Dublin (LL.B.), Trinity College Dublin (Master’s), and a PhD from the National University of Ireland (1991).

Research Focus: European Union law and governance, with emphases on accountability, transparency, privacy, and fundamental rights. Key areas include EU constitutional law, digital governance, and institutional oversight. Her work bridges legal theory and empirical analysis, emphasizing democratic engagement in EU processes.

Publications: Recent works explore transparency challenges, the European Ombudsman’s role, and digital-era document access rights. Notable outputs include co-edited volumes on EU governance and contributions to law journals analyzing privacy and accountability.
