Dr. Declan Wiffen is a Lecturer in Critical Theory and Contemporary Literature at the University of Kent, and also serves as Employability and Placements Officer. His research focuses on environmental humanities, queer ecologies, and the representation of non-human entities such as estuaries, lichens, and plants. He has contributed to interdisciplinary projects like 'Unfiltered Coast' (AHRC-funded climate research) and 'Queer Estuary' (Arts Council England-funded collaboration exploring LGBTQIA+ environmental engagement). His teaching includes modules on creative non-fiction and autofiction, and he organizes queer ecological writing courses and LGBTQ+ writing retreats.
Recent publications include essays in The Edinburgh Companion to Queer Reading (2024) and The Affects of Pedagogy in Literary Studies (2023), as well as an afterword for Derek Jarman’s short fiction collection. He has received teaching awards from both the University and his students.
Current projects include a book on a 1950s-60s queer seed merchant in Kent, and collaborations such as a special edition of Litmus on lichen and a queer gardening TV project bingenTV (forthcoming 2025).
