Dr. Deborah Watkins Bruner serves as Senior Vice President for Research at Emory University, holding dual appointments as Professor and Robert W. Woodruff Chair in Nursing at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine. She is also a member and past associate director for mentorship at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she leads significant research initiatives in cancer care.
Dr. Bruner earned her PhD in nursing with a focus on outcomes research from the University of Pennsylvania. She has maintained continuous research funding since 1998 from prestigious organizations including the American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, National Cancer Institute, and National Institutes of Health, consistently ranking among the top 5% of NIH-funded investigators worldwide since 2012 according to the Blue Ridge Institute.
As an internationally renowned researcher and clinical trialist, Dr. Bruner's work centers on patient-reported outcomes (PROs), symptom management, and comparative effectiveness of radiotherapy modalities. Her current research investigates the role of the human microbiome in carcinogenesis and cancer treatment outcomes. Her global health initiatives include developing the first modern radiotherapy program in Ethiopia through 3D treatment planning and quality assurance, and she previously chaired the advisory board for the Emory University School of Nursing-Addis Ababa University partnership that established AAU's first doctoral nursing program.
Analysis of Dr. Bruner's recent publications reveals a strategic research trajectory focused on patient-centered cancer care, with growing emphasis on microbiome interactions with cancer treatments, innovative symptom monitoring systems, and precision radiation therapy approaches. Her work consistently bridges clinical oncology, nursing science, and patient experience to improve quality of life outcomes.

Dr. Bruner has mentored numerous nursing, psychology, epidemiology, and medical junior faculty members alongside pre- and post-doctoral students, serving as primary mentor for both nurses and physicians on nine career development awards. Her leadership in the National Cancer Institute's National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) has transformed cancer care paradigms. Appointed by President Obama to the National Cancer Advisory Board, she remains the first and only nurse to lead a national clinical trials cooperative group, having served as Principal Investigator of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Community Clinical Oncology Program and currently as multi-PI of the NRG Oncology National Community Oncology Research Program.
Through NRG Oncology, Dr. Bruner directs research on symptom amelioration, quality of life, and comparative effectiveness trials in community settings where most cancer care occurs. Her pioneering work shifted cancer clinical trials from a historically medically dominated focus on survival and toxicity to a patient-centered bio-behavioral approach incorporating patient-reported outcomes that has fundamentally changed clinical practice guidelines worldwide.
