Deborah Van Heekeren is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Communication, Society and Culture, Macquarie University. Her research focuses on Melanesian cultures, particularly in Papua New Guinea, emphasizing anthropology, religious studies, and oral traditions. She has conducted extensive fieldwork with the Vula'a people, exploring topics such as Christianity's local adaptation, oral mnemonics, and indigenous cosmology.
Her work bridges ethnography, phenomenology, and interdisciplinary studies, addressing themes like identity, syncretism, and the intersection of traditional practices with modernity. She has led projects on Vula'a Christianity and cultural history, funded by institutional grants.
Key research interests include Melanesian Christianity, oral traditions, and the poetics of knowledge. Her publications analyze topics such as mythological symbolism, environmental anthropology, and the moral dimensions of economic practices in rural communities.
Deborah has supervised collaborative research projects and contributed to museum curation through her work on indigenous art and cosmology. She maintains academic engagement through book reviews and interdisciplinary dialogues, emphasizing the lived experiences of Pacific Islanders.
