Deborah Stein is a Lecturer in the Department of Art History at San Francisco State University (SFSU), part of the School of Art. She holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and has taught at multiple institutions, including UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Mills College. Her research focuses on medieval and early modern South Asian art, particularly Hindu and Jain temples in Southern Rajasthan, multi-sectarian patronage, and comparative urban aesthetics between 15th-century India and empires like Venice and Timurid/Ottoman. She maintains an active ceramics art practice in the Bay Area.

Research Interests: Stein’s work explores ritual practices, material culture, and heritage through studies of stone inscriptions and temple histories. Current projects compare 15th-century urban aesthetics in India with European and Middle Eastern city-states. She also investigates mineral worship, tantric religion, and industrial sites in premodern India.
