Professor Deborah Martin of Clark University's Geography Department is an urban geographer specializing in place theory, local politics, legal geography, and social movements. Co-director of the HERO program (Human-Environment Regional Observatory), she engages undergraduates in socio-ecological research on urban greening initiatives.

Her research explores place-making practices, human-environment relations, and legal geographies across US cities like Minneapolis, Athens (GA), and Massachusetts municipalities. Recent publications analyze community land trust governance, urban canopy dynamics, and place-based activism. Articles span Urban Geography, Political Geography, and Antipode, with emerging 2025 research on relational place theories.
