Deborah Lipstadt is the University Distinguished Professor at Emory University, a role shared with notable figures like Jimmy Carter and Salman Rushdie. She holds the Dorot Professorship in Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies within the Department of Religion. Previously, she served as the U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism (2022–2023), a position of ambassadorial rank, during which she traveled to 30+ countries and launched initiatives like the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism.
Her research focuses on Holocaust history, modern antisemitism, and Jewish studies. She founded Emory’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, designing curricula on Jewish civilization. Her landmark legal victory against Holocaust denier David Irving (1996–2000) was chronicled in her book *History on Trial* and adapted into the film *Denial* (2016). She has authored influential works like *Antisemitism: Here and Now* (2019), analyzing rising global hate.
Awarded Emory’s highest teaching honors—including the 2020 Exemplary Teacher Award—Lipstadt advises Emory’s president and dean, and engages undergraduates through annual lectures and classroom instruction. She has advised national institutions like the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and represented the U.S. at international Holocaust commemorations, including the 60th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation (2005).
