Deborah L. Nelson is the Dean of the Division of the Arts & Humanities at the University of Chicago, holding the Helen B. and Frank L. Sulzberger Professorship in English Language and Literature and the College. Her research focuses on late 20th-century U.S. culture and politics, with specialties in American literature, gender and sexuality studies, photography, and Cold War history.
She earned a Ph.D. in English from the City University of New York, a Master’s from Columbia University, and a Bachelor’s from Yale University. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Foundation. Notable awards include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize (2017) and the Gordon J. Laing Award (2019).
Nelson has led initiatives such as the Mellon-funded Sawyer Seminar '@1948' and co-edited a special issue of Critical Inquiry. She is a founding member of the research collective Post45 and has held leadership roles including Chair of the English Department, Deputy Provost for Graduate Education, and Director of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality.
