Deborah Estrin is a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell Tech (Cornell University), holding the Robert V. Tishman Founder's Chair and serving as Associate Dean for Impact. She is also an Affiliate Faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her research focuses on digitally-enabled innovations in healthcare, particularly optimizing clinical outcomes and patient quality of life. Estrin founded the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PiTech) to integrate societal impact into education and careers. Previously, she directed the NSF-funded Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) at UCLA, pioneering mobile/wireless sensing systems. She co-founded Open mHealth, advises early-stage health startups, and collaborates with institutions like NY Presbyterian and MacArthur Foundation.
Her awards include the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2022), MacArthur Fellowship (2018), and memberships in the National Academies of Engineering (2009) and Medicine (2019). Collaborators include experts in healthcare technology, sensing systems, and aging research. Estrin’s grants span NSF, MacArthur Foundation, and Siegel Family Endowment. She advises over 50 PhD students and leads initiatives in mHealth, telemedicine, and aging-in-place technologies.
Research interests include AI-driven diagnostics, mobile health applications, and ethical data use. Notable projects include Limbr (chronic pain app) and v-RFA (voice-based geriatric assessment). Her work bridges technical innovation with societal needs, emphasizing accessibility and equity in healthcare technology.
