Deborah Cowen is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on the politics of infrastructure, examining how conflicts over energy, transport, and security systems intersect with social justice movements and reframe citizenship. She has contributed extensively to critical geography and urban studies.

Dr. Cowen's work explores themes such as the suburbanization of poverty, urban securitization, and the militarization of civilian spaces. She is the author of The Deadly Life of Logistics: Mapping Violence in Global Trade and Military Workfare: The Soldier and Social Citizenship in Canada.
She was awarded the 2016 International Political Sociology Book Award for her work on logistics and global trade. Her editorial roles include co-editing Duke University Press' Errantries book series and serving as a long-time editor for Environment and Planning D: Society and Space.
Dr. Cowen collaborates with communities in Toronto on research and arts interventions, including the National Film Board of Canada's award-winning HIGHRISE project. She is also a board member of the Groundswell Community Justice Trust Fund.
