Deborah Charlesworth serves as a Professor at the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Evolutionary Biology since 1997, following her professorship at the University of Chicago (1992-1997). Her academic journey includes foundational roles at Cambridge University, University of Chicago, and University of Sussex.
Her research specializes in evolutionary and population genetics with emphasis on sex chromosome evolution and breeding systems. Current work investigates Y chromosome genetics in guppies (Poecilia reticulata), while past research explored self-incompatibility mechanisms and Y-linked gene evolution in white campion (Silene latifolia).
Key scientific recognition includes election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2005. She secured an ERC Advanced grant (project 695225) for guppy sex chromosome research and has been an invited speaker at prestigious events including the Crafoord Prize symposium (Stockholm, 2015) and SMBE Conference (Vienna, 2015).
Though not currently accepting PhD students, she maintains active research participation through regular attendance at Population Genetics Group meetings and recent scholarly output documented through June 2024.
