Deborah Carr is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University. Her research focuses on microbial ecology, bioremediation, and environmental sustainability. She investigates how microbial communities respond to pollutants like pharmaceuticals, crude oil, and drilling fluids, emphasizing their roles in nutrient cycling, organic carbon utilization, and ecosystem restoration.
Current projects include bioremediation strategies for produced water in drilling operations, effects of pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluent, and natural attenuation of pollutants like PPCPs (Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products). Collaborations involve molecular characterization of sodium-iodide symporters in amphibians and triclosan's developmental impacts.
Her work spans soil, sediment, and wetland ecosystems, with emphasis on arid soil dynamics and urban stormwater contamination. She teaches courses on ecology and environmental sustainability.
Key areas of expertise include microbial community resilience, environmental toxicology, and sustainable remediation technologies. Her research integrates molecular biology with field studies to address real-world environmental challenges.
