Deborah Aller is a Senior Extension Associate and Program Coordinator for the New York Soil Health Initiative at Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, Soil and Crop Sciences Section. She leads applied research and extension activities focused on sustainable soil management practices, climate resilience, and biochar utilization in perennial fruit crop systems. Since 2022, her work has emphasized quantifying soil health in orchards and advancing climate-smart farming strategies.
Aller holds an M.Sc. in Environmental Science and International Development from the University of Edinburgh and a Ph.D. in Soil Science from Iowa State University. She is a member of the Cornell Climate Smart Farming Team and serves on the board of directors for the United States Biochar Initiative.
Her research interests span soil health metrics, biochar applications, and sustainable agriculture. Notable projects include evaluating long-term biochar impacts on crop yields and soil quality in the Midwest and developing methodologies for soil health benchmarking in production environments.
Collaborations include the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station and PRO-DAIRY. While no formal awards are listed, her contributions to climate adaptation and soil health have been highlighted in media coverage, such as articles on organic waste recycling and New York’s agricultural climate resilience strategies.
