Deborah A. Barany is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia (UGA). She co-directs the Neurostimulation Laboratory and leads the Brain and Action Laboratory. Dr. Barany teaches in the pre-clinical curriculum at the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership on the UGA Health Sciences Campus.
- B.A. in Neuroscience and Mathematics, Hamilton College (2011)
- M.A. in Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara (2013)
- Ph.D. in Dynamical Neuroscience, University of California, Santa Barbara (2016)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurology, University of California, Santa Barbara (2018)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Kinesiology, Emory University (2020)
Her research focuses on neural mechanisms of goal-directed movement using behavioral, neuroimaging, and neurostimulation techniques. Key areas include motor control, sensorimotor decision-making, and translational neuroscience for stroke neurorehabilitation.
Scientific Awards:
- Graduate Research Fellowship, National Science Foundation (2011)
- Affiliates Graduate Dissertation Fellowship, University of California, Santa Barbara (2015)
- Postdoctoral Training Grant, National Institutes of Health (Emory University, 2016)
- Georgia StrokeNet Fellowship, National Institutes of Health (Emory University, 2017)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, American Heart Association (2018)
Dr. Barany’s research integrates behavioral experiments (movement kinematics, eye-tracking), neuroimaging (fMRI, MRS), and neurostimulation (TMS) to study sensorimotor neuroscience. She aims to establish a framework for investigating movement impairments post-brain injury or neurodegenerative diseases.
She directs the Brain and Action Laboratory and co-directs the Neurostimulation Laboratory at UGA, focusing on applied translational research in neurorehabilitation and exercise science.
