Debbie I. Craig, PhD, AT-R serves as the Dean of the College of Health at Oregon State University, a position she assumed on July 1, 2025. Previously, she was Dean of the College of Health at the University of Alaska Anchorage for three years, and before that, she spent nearly 20 years at Northern Arizona University where she rose from assistant professor to associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services. Her career trajectory reflects a deep commitment to advancing health education and research across diverse institutional settings.
Dr. Craig earned her bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training from California State University, Chico, followed by a master's degree in athletic training from the University of Arizona under the mentorship of Hall of Famer Dr. Gary Delforge. She later completed her PhD in higher education leadership from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, after a decade of clinical work in NCAA Division I athletic departments.
Dr. Craig's research expertise spans multiple areas within sports medicine and athletic training education. Her primary research focuses include sport concussions, medial tibial stress syndrome, and various knee injuries. She pioneered the application of brain-compatible learning principles to athletic training education and has extensively researched professionalism development in athletic training students. Her work on the NCAA and US Department of Defense Mind Matters grant program delivered groundbreaking data for the concussion healthcare community through community-based participatory research.
Analysis of Dr. Craig's publication history reveals a strong trajectory from foundational educational research to specialized clinical investigations. Her early work established frameworks for brain-compatible learning in athletic training education, while her more recent publications focus on concussion reporting behaviors and evidence-based injury prevention. Dr. Craig has secured significant research funding throughout her career, most notably as PI for the NCAA/DoD concussion research initiative. She has published two textbooks, one with three editions, and successfully transitioned a bachelor's athletic training program into a master's program with multiple delivery sites. As Dean at OSU, she is championing AI applications in healthcare to address health equity challenges, particularly in rural and underserved communities across Oregon.
Under Dr. Craig's leadership, the College of Health oversees extension programs serving all 36 Oregon counties and international initiatives including the Botswana Global Health Initiative. Her vision focuses on ensuring 'that every person, family and community in Oregon, the nation and world experiences lifelong health and well-being' through integrated approaches to health, leveraging OSU's land grant mission to deliver research, education, and service where needed most.
