Dr. Deanna Dannels serves as Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) at North Carolina State University since 2021. Leading ~4,600 students across eight departments, two schools, and two centers, she champions humanistic education’s role in addressing societal challenges. Her strategic initiatives include cohort scholar programs for underserved students, faculty research reboot programs post-pandemic, wellness initiatives, and outreach in North Carolina’s public schools.
Education: B.A. in Communication and History from Gonzaga University (1999); M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Utah (1999). Former roles include Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, editor of Communication Education, and leadership in graduate training programs.
Research focuses on teacher training, communication in STEM disciplines, and pedagogical innovation. Key works include Incorporating Oral Communication in the Disciplines (2017) and Eight Essential Questions Teachers Ask (2015). Awards include NC State’s Outstanding Teacher Award and NCTE’s Best Pedagogy Article Recognition.
