Dean Billheimer is a Professor in Public Health, Statistics-GIDP, and the BIO5 Institute at the University of Arizona, serving as Director of Statistical Consulting. His research integrates advanced biostatistics with respiratory disease investigation, focusing on pediatric asthma mechanisms and interventions.
His primary research areas include genetic determinants of wheezing phenotypes (e.g., chromosome 17q12-21 variants), environmental impacts on lung development (nitrogen dioxide exposure), biomarker discovery (CC16, creatine kinase), and health disparities in asthma treatment response. He employs sophisticated statistical modeling for longitudinal cohort studies and clinical trials.
Publication analysis reveals consistent focus on childhood asthma pathophysiology through 2023, with emphasis on gene-environment interactions, type 2 inflammation pathways, and real-world treatment efficacy. Recent work examines school-based corticosteroid delivery systems and ethnic disparities in therapeutic responsiveness.
As Principal Investigator for the BEAMS trial (Barriers to Effective Asthma Management in Schools), he leads a multidisciplinary team including Paloma Beamer, Tara Carr, Darren Cusanovich, Fernando Martinez, and Donata Vercelli in evaluating school-supervised inhaled corticosteroid regimens for children with asthma. This NIH-funded study remains actively enrolling participants.
