Dr. Dawna Marie Thomas is a Professor jointly appointed in the Departments of Public Health and Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Simmons University. She currently serves as Chair of the Department of Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her work intersects disability studies, gender, race, ethnicity, and class, with a focus on Cape Verdean and African American communities in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood.
Her research explores health disparities, family violence, and culturally relevant healthcare policies. Key projects include the Cabo Verdean Women's Project, examining four generations of women's experiences with domestic violence and healthcare access, and Understanding Disability in the Cape Verdean Community, the first study on disability in this population. She advocates for marginalized communities through grassroots coalition building and community-based research.
Her publications include the book Women's Health: Readings on Social, Economic, and Political Issues and articles in journals like Violence Against Women Journal. Her work critiques systemic failures in addressing the needs of Cape Verdean communities, emphasizing cultural relevance in policy and service delivery.
