Dawn Michelle Baunach is an Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development at Georgia Tech, where she focuses on faculty affairs and diversity initiatives. She previously served as Professor of Sociology and Department Chair at Kennesaw State University, and earlier led the Sociology Doctoral Program at Georgia State University. Her academic career spans over 20 years in sociology, emphasizing gender and sexuality studies, quantitative research methods, and social inequality.
Dr. Baunach holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Virginia (along with MA and BA from Duke University). Her research explores labor market inequalities, sexualities-based discrimination, HIV/AIDS stigma, and LGBTQ+ rights. She co-edited the influential textbook Sex Matters: The Sexuality and Society Reader (5th ed., 2019).
Her awards include the Teresa M. Joyce Award for Excellence and Kennesaw State’s Presidential Diversity Award. She has held leadership roles in professional organizations like the American Sociological Association and Society for the Study of Social Problems, advancing queer studies and public policy initiatives.
Her administrative achievements include establishing diversity councils, transdisciplinary programs (e.g., Cybersecurity MS), and improving graduate student outcomes through structured cohort models. Current focus areas include institutional DEI strategies and intercollegiate collaboration through her provost role.
