Professor Dawn M. Blitz is a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Miami University. Her research focuses on understanding cellular mechanisms enabling neural circuits to produce flexible outputs for behaviors like locomotion and decision-making. She uses the stomatogastric nervous system of the Jonah crab to study central pattern generator (CPG) circuits, investigating modulatory pathways and synaptic dynamics.
Her research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), NIH NINDS, and Miami University’s undergraduate research programs. Key areas of exploration include circuit feedback mechanisms, neuromodulator action, and the synaptic basis of behavioral switches.
Professor Blitz teaches courses such as BIO 452W/552: Neuromodulation: Cells to Circuits and BIO 491: Seminar in Neural Control of Movement. Her lab’s work integrates in vitro and in vivo studies to bridge neuronal properties with behavioral outcomes in crustaceans.
