Dr. David van Vliet is an Associate Professor in the Department of City Planning at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Architecture. His work focuses on sustainable community planning, urban ecology, and resilient cities. He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia, an MEDes from the University of Calgary, and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. van Vliet's research emphasizes innovative urban projects in Scandinavia and northern Europe, particularly policy and practice in ecological planning. He is affiliated with global networks like the International Society for Urban Ecology and the Biophilic Cities Network. His teaching includes courses on urban ecology, sustainable design, and regional planning.
Key projects include the Winnipeg GreenMap initiative and the Building Green Educational Project, which explore sustainable urban infrastructure and green building practices. He has presented widely on climate resilience, multifunctional land use, and urban sustainability strategies, collaborating with international organizations such as the International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP).
His work bridges academic research and practical implementation, addressing climate adaptation, urban renewal, and visualization tools for sustainable design. Recent activities include workshops on floodway planning in Kraków and participation in the Climate Resilient Cities (CRC) initiative.
