Dr. David Wright is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health and Human Nutrition Sciences (HHNS) at the University of Guelph. He holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Lipids, Metabolism and Health. His research focuses on how exercise and diet influence adipose tissue metabolism and its effects on glucose homeostasis. Wright completed his BPE at the University of Calgary, an MSc at Arizona State University, and a PhD in Human Bioenergetics at Ball State University, followed by postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine.
His research interests include biochemical pathways activated by exercise, mitochondrial biogenesis in adipose tissue, and metabolic effects of anti-diabetic medications. Recent work examines how environmental factors (e.g., temperature) and pharmacological agents (e.g., olanzapine) impact metabolic health. Key findings include exercise’s role in mitigating drug-induced hyperglycemia and the protective effects of glucagon signaling loss on adipose tissue function.
Wright’s lab (ANNU 322) explores metabolic adaptations across multiple tissues, emphasizing translational research linking basic science to clinical applications. He has published extensively in journals like FASEB Journal, Am J Physiol Cell, and Psychoneuroendocrinology, with a focus on obesity, mitochondrial regulation, and drug-metabolism interactions.
