David Wharam, Ph.D., Dr. rer. nat., serves as a Professor and Director at the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) within the Department of Physics at the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He has held this position since April 1, 1997, and remains active in academic instruction as evidenced by his teaching responsibilities during the Winter Semester 2019/2020.
His research interests span multiple specialized areas of physics, with particular expertise in Optics, Semiconductor Physics, and Nanostructures. His work extends into interdisciplinary fields including BioNano-Physics and Medical Physics, reflecting the applied nature of his research at the Institute of Applied Physics.
Professor Wharam teaches core physics courses including Physics Basic Course 3 (Optics) and its calculation exercises, along with specialized seminars on BioNano-Physics/Medical Physics, Semiconductor nanostructures and devices, and the physics of nanostructures and interfaces. His academic home is within the Physical Electronics research group, which forms part of the Institute of Applied Physics structure at the university.
